Fashion reflects undercurrents of cultural trends. For several decades now, it has been the fashion for women in the United States to appear thin to anemic to anorexic. In the past, and in other cultures, heavy to hefty to downright obese people earned the most respect and ardor. Viewed through the cultural framework of these trends, I can see that thin becomes fashionable when thin is hard to obtain just like fat is fashionable when being fat proves a person earned those extra pounds.
